SYSTEMS APPLICATIONS SUPERVISOR

The Systems Applications Supervisor is responsible for supervising applications systems development, implementation, and maintenance. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Supervises a small professional staff by interviewing and recommending for hire, providing training, assigning and reviewing work, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Reviews requests for data processing applications development and maintenance to determine project’s feasibility, estimated cost, and man-hour requirements. Oversees projects by establishing priorities, selecting team members, and tracking project status to meet user requirements and time frames. Analyzes user’s data processing needs and supervises or develops detail design specifications for information flow. Investigates source of problems encountered by user’s operations or application’s staff and initiates corrective action. Writes or reviews documentation and test runs for new or revised applications to ensure validity of data and conformance with agency standards. May generate and maintain operating and teleprocessing systems. Monitors on-going performance of designated systems. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Knowledge of the application of systems analysis and programming in automation information systems. Ability to review results, determine the source of problems/errors, and devise corrective actions. Ability to formulate a design for a complex system of programs to solve multifaceted problems, considering hardware/software/manpower required, and design a system of interlocking programs. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of subordinates. Ability to discern necessary support actions/input and to write detailed actions and procedures for non-technical personnel. Ability to understand relevant detail from oral information and explain technical terms and information.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field; plus four years of experience in systems programming or analysis, including one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
