REGISTERED PHARMACIST

The Registered Pharmacist is responsible for the operation of a pharmacy compounding and dispensing medications following prescriptions issued by physicians, dentists, or other authorized medical practitioners. This position is governed by state and federal law and agency/institution policy, and regulations by the Board of Pharmacy.

Typical Functions:

Reviews prescriptions to assure accuracy, determine the required ingredients, and evaluate their suitability for patient use. Maintains records such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, charge system files, inventories, control records for radioactive nuclei, and registries of poisons, narcotics, and controlled drugs. Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to plan, monitor, review, and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of drugs and drug regimens by providing advice on drug applications and characteristics. Compounds and dispenses medications as prescribed by medical professionals by calculating, weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients, or supervises subordinates in the performance of these duties. Provides information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage. Orders and purchases pharmaceutical supplies, medical supplies, and drugs. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of pharmacology. Knowledge of state and federal laws governing prescription drugs, drug handlers, and related areas. Knowledge of the organization and operations of hospitals, nursing homes, and similar medical facilities. Ability to develop materials and present in-service training programs to medical personnel. Ability to maintain records and inventories of controlled substances. Ability to interpret, fill, and dispense drug orders. Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.

Minimum Qualifications:

Licensed as a Pharmacist by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy as established by Arkansas Code Ãâ€ÂšÃƒÃ‚ƒÃƒ‚‚§ 17-92-402. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
