PUBLIC DEFENDER INTERPRETER

The Public Defender Interpreter is responsible for providing interpretation for non-English speaking defendants or defendants for whom English is not their first language including in the courtroom and during investigations and interviews. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Special Job Requirements:

Must be certified as a Court Interpreter by the Arkansas Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) in accordance with ACA 16-10-1101 et seq., or obtain certification as a Court Interpreter within 12 months of hire

Typical Functions:

Meets with the attorney, the client, the clients family, potential witnesses, and any other non-English speaking individuals who may have some relation to the case. Assists the attorneys in dealing with the client, the clients family, and any other non-English speaking individuals to ensure that the non-English speaking client and other people potentially related to the case are fully apprised of the law, the facts as presented by the prosecution, and any and all defenses available to the defendant. Makes recommendations to the attorneys regarding pertinent historical information for investigation and possible mitigation of the case. Collaborates with the attorneys to ensure that the non-English client receives his or her Sixth Amendment guarantee of effective assistance of counsel. Provides cite translation of English or Spanish documents as required during interviews, proceedings, and hearings. Verifies and corrects transcription of written materials. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the Spanish language. Knowledge of the court system and the functioning of the various parties within the court system. Ability to both speak and write fluently in English and Spanish. Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words. Ability to perform simultaneous and consecutive interpretations. Ability to translate written documents.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelors degree in Spanish or a related field.
