MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST SUPERVISOR

The Medical Technologist Supervisor is responsible for directing clinical laboratory operations. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Supervises a small technical staff by interviewing, recommending for hire/termination, training, assigning and reviewing work, counseling, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Develops laboratory policies and procedures, establishes test standards, and approves and standardizes new tests. Maintains laboratory records, prepares reports of laboratory activity, as required, and performs quality control and proficiency tests on laboratory procedures. Schedules clients, obtains specimens, performs laboratory tests, documents and interprets results, reports abnormal results to physicians, and charts results on client’s medical records. Requisitions laboratory supplies, performs preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment, cleans and disinfects laboratory, and autoclaves contaminated material. Maintains procedure manuals for lab and infection control and prepares lab budget. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of principles and theories of medical technology, chemistry, microbiology, and related health sciences. Knowledge of the methods and techniques of medical technology, chemical laboratory management, and administrative procedures. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinates. Ability to organize, direct, and evaluate laboratory testing and production. Ability to develop laboratory policies and procedures and establish test standards. Ability to maintain laboratory equipment. Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or a related area; plus three years of experience in a clinical laboratory, including one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
