GREENHOUSE TECHNICIAN

The Greenhouse Technician is responsible for the routine maintenance and care of greenhouse facilities. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Plans and oversees all the activities necessary for the maintenance of greenhouses. Provides the proper environmental conditions for greenhouse plants. Waters, fertilizes, and prunes plants, makes diagnoses and decisions as to the treatment of plant diseases and insect infestations, and prepares various soil mixtures for plants as required. Assists laboratory instructors in preparation of materials, planting seeds, gathering and assembling plants and in presenting demonstrations to students. Assists students in setting up and performing experiments with plant propagation experiments. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of methods, techniques, and equipment used in nursery operations and horticultural programs. Knowledge of chemical pesticides used to control plant diseases. Ability to recognize health of plants and maintain proper environmental conditions. Ability to mix large quantities of different soil mixtures and sterilize them. Ability to keep accurate records of plant growth for documentation of growth rates.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma.
