COMMODITY SPECIALIST

The Commodity Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations concerning food storage and usage by recipient agencies receiving USDA commodities. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Special Job Requirements:

Constant in-state travel is required.

Typical Functions:

Examines and evaluates records and inspects storage area of schools, correctional facilities, charitable institutions, and other recipient agencies receiving USDA commodities, to ensure compliance with USDA guidelines related to usage, storage, distribution, cleanliness, and temperature control. Performs commodities inventory counts and compares agency records to ensure consistent totals. Documents and reports findings on non-compliance areas to Commodity Distribution Office for review and necessary actions. Investigates claims for commodity food loss due to improper storage, infestation, and inventory shortage. Notifies recipient agencies of all changes in related procedures. Conducts trainings and prepares materials for presentations. Develops a cost effective travel itinerary and submits required travel documents for reimbursement. Maintains data and prepares spreadsheets and reports. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of warehouse procedures and methods relating to food storage. Knowledge of inventory control procedures and practices. Knowledge of computers and record keeping principles. Knowledge of basic accounting principles. Ability to schedule and conduct on-site inspections, to determine compliance with health standards, laws and/or regulations, and recommend corrective actions. Ability to perform data entry and generate reports. Ability to conduct training presentations.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus four years of experience in inventory control and warehousing in the food service industry or a related field.

Required Certificates:

Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license.
