CLEST SUPERVISOR

The Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy (ALETA) Training Supervisor is responsible for directing the academy's training activities. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy and procedures.

Special Job Requirements:

Twenty-four (24) hour on-call duty is required; occasional exposure to danger while searching for escaped inmates is required.

Typical Functions:

Supervises a large unite of training instructors and administrative support staff including making background checks, interviewing applicants and recommending for hire, approving leave, making work assignments, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Establishes new courses and methods based on research, changing laws, critique of current course content and methods, and classroom evaluations. Reviews and approves course curriculum, lesson plans, audio-visual aids, handouts, and test instruments, to ensure that course objectives are met and properly documented. Coordinates and conducts in-service and regional training to new and existing employees and regional training to law enforcement officials throughout the state. Researches and recommends the purchase of equipment, writes specifications, and gets bids on equipment. Participates in search for escaped inmates as required. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of principles, practices, techniques of law enforcement, and the criminal justice system. Knowledge of principles of hand-to-hand combat, self-defense, and the use of small arms. Ability to instruct in the field by demonstrating techniques in self-defense and the use of small fire arms. Ability to plan work and oversee the work of subordinates and to oversee and control students engaged in potentially dangerous training exercised. Ability to direct the work of inmates and maintain security.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, or related field; plus four years of experience in Law Enforcement or a related area, including one year in a supervisory capacity. Certified as a Specialized Law Enforcement Officer by the Arkansas Law Enforcement Standards Commission in accordance with ACA 12-9-106. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
