5 Tips for Shopping at State Surplus on Public Sale Days

Written by Annie Perkins

October 22, 2021

Arkansas State Surplus, also known by the name Marketing & Redistribution (M&R), is a section of the Arkansas Department of Transformation and Shared Services (TSS). State Surplus oversees the sale of state property from one state entity, local government, or non-profit to another, as well as the public.

Every Wednesday from 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM, members of the public can shop at the State Surplus facility, located at 6620 Young Road in Little Rock. Surplus inventory is ever-changing and usually includes items like office furniture, décor, computers, miscellaneous electronics, cars, boats, busses, large appliances, medical equipment, specialty tools and equipment and much more. We post a preview album on our FACEBOOK page each Tuesday. Outside of checking our preview photos, here are five tips for a successful shopping day at State Surplus.

Come Early. On public sale days, the doors open at 7:30 AM. However, we’ve been known to draw a crowd and lines start to form well before. Because all items at State Surplus are unique and usually not available in duplicates, the best items each week go quickly. Our goods sell on a first-come, first-serve basis, so you are more likely to get what you want if you are at the front of the line. Once you enter the facility, you can claim an item by tearing the purchase tag off and taking it to the front.

Preview Items. If you are not already following the Arkansas State Surplus Facebook page, you are missing out! Every Tuesday, we will post preview photos and pricing of some items for sale on Public Sale Day. Though this is not a comprehensive look at everything that will be up for sale, it does give you an idea of some of the specific goods that will be available.

Your Ride. Be sure to bring a vehicle large enough to transport your purchase. For example, are you looking to buy a dining table or large bookshelf? If so, a small car probably will not do the trick. Unfortunately, State Surplus does not hold items for later pickup. So if you see an item you like, make sure you can take it home!

Bring the Brawn. We are proud to have a staff that is always willing to lend a helping hand. While they are happy to assist you in loading your purchased items, it is ultimately the customer’s responsibility. Customers are also responsible for tying and securing items to their vehicles or trailers. If you plan to purchase a heavy item, think about bringing a friend to help load it.

Dress for the Occasion. Keep in mind that our inventory is located in a large warehouse that can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Also, if you arrive early, you will be standing outside as you wait in line for our doors to open. While we do our best to keep our building comfortable, be sure to dress according to the weather; rain, snow, or shine.\

Planning ahead when shopping at State Surplus will make your experience easy and enjoyable. For more information, visit the Arkansas State Surplus Facebook page or the Marketing & Redistribution website.
