VETERINARIAN ASSISTANT

The Veterinarian Assistant is responsible for the physical examination of greyhounds and the collection, labeling, and recording of greyhound urine samples, including preparing reports of sample collections to ensure proper greyhound identification. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Special Job Requirements:

Shift work, involving irregular working hours, to include holidays and weekends, is required. Must be able to bend to collect samples and lift injured dogs. Exposure to varied weather conditions is required.

Typical Functions:

Observes weigh-ins, physical condition, and handling of greyhounds and notifies veterinarian of any weight change. Collects, prepares, labels, and records urine samples of each greyhound daily, to check for illegal substance usage, and submits reports associated with sample collections for laboratory testing and identification in accordance with veterinarian and vendor instructions. Observes judges’ examination of ear tattoos to verify identification. Assists veterinarian with treatment of injured animals and preparing samples and paperwork for mailing to the testing laboratory. Maintains facilities by disinfecting, sweeping, mopping, and dusting as directed by the veterinarian. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of animal inspection techniques. Knowledge of basic keyboarding techniques. Knowledge of national and state laws, rules, and regulations governing greyhound racing and pari-mutuel wagering. Ability to coordinate and lead the work of others. Ability to evaluate condition of greyhounds. Ability to record and retrieve official sample data.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus one year of experience in veterinary assistance, race track operations, or a related field. OR The formal education equivalent of an associate’s degree in veterinary technology, agriculture, or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
