TSS STATE NETWORK SPECIALIST

The State Network Specialist is responsible for the monitoring and maintaining of network systems. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Special Job Requirements:

On-call duty 24×7 for resolution of problem situations and travel within the state is required. Shift work may be required.

Typical Functions:

Tests and evaluates state network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements. Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and resolves hardware, software, or other network and system problems, and replaces defective components when necessary. Provides users with assistance resolving network related problems, consults with users to identify current network operating procedures and to clarify network objectives. Operates master consoles to monitor the performance of computer systems and networks, and to coordinate computer network access and use. Analyzes equipment performance records to determine the need for repair or replacement. Gathers data pertaining to customer needs, and uses the information to identify, predict, interpret, and evaluate system and network requirements. Performs routine network startup and shutdown procedures, and maintains control records. Maintains an inventory of parts for emergency repairs. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of object oriented programming languages, as well as client and server applications, development processes, and multimedia and Internet technology. Knowledge of computer systems, maintenance, and updating of hardware and software. Ability to customize and update computer systems, as required by the needs of statewide agencies. Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of an associate’s degree in computer science or related field; plus two years of experience in network administration. Cisco Certified Network Associate within one year and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) within six years. OR Completion of technical training in computer science, data processing, or a related field acquired from a vocational, military or industrial setting; plus two years of experience in computer support. Cisco Certified Network Associate within one year and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) within six years. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
