TRAVEL INFORMATION WRITER

This Travel Information Writer promotes the tourism aspects of the state of Arkansas by writing news releases, feature articles, and web site content, covering events and attractions in Arkansas. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Acts as a liaison and public relations representative between Arkansas’s tourism division and hospitality industry to research events and tourism development in the state. Writes copy to be placed in various Department publications and e-newsletters. Writes news releases and feature articles covering attractions and events. Writes copy to be placed on the Department’s suite of Web sites. Writes scripts for slide shows or special programs upon request. Takes photographs when visiting destinations or attending events which are added to the Department archives. Updates business and attraction listings, within assigned territory, that appear in the Tour Guide and on Arkansas.com Conducts promotional tours for members of the media and assists with travel arrangements. Provides presentations to groups, such as civic organizations or local school classes. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of Associated Press style guidelines. Knowledge of HTML coding for posting to the Internet. Ability to research reference materials in libraries, on the Internet, and through personal interviews. Ability to manage multiple deadlines. Ability to write descriptive and colorful feature releases that motivate travel to Arkansas. Ability to organize and present clear, concise oral and written presentations about attractions and events in Arkansas. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Strong vocabulary, writing, and grammatical skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or a related field, plus two years of experience in creative writing and media relations. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
