SPECIAL EDUCATION SUPERVISOR

The Special Education Supervisor is responsible for coordinating special education and instruction activities and/or programs, ensuring quality control and appropriateness of program, coordinating special projects, and preparing applicable reports. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Supervises a small to medium staff by assigning and reviewing work, establishing procedures, training staff, approving leave, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Coordinates and conducts education and training improvements to comply with federal and state laws and regulations, and provides technical assistance concerning improvement activities and federal funding. Oversees Special Education policy development for staff manuals to ensure promulgation of Special Education criteria by monitoring deadlines and providing technical assistance. Analyzes, interprets and applies state and federal laws, rules, and regulations, as related to licensure, develops reports, and conducts trainings, workshops, and professional conferences pertaining to special education requirements and policy revision. Prepares status reports, memorandums, and other correspondence, plans, creates, and implements programs for students, and attends and participates in meetings and seminars Coordinates special projects as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of federal and state laws regarding licensure. Knowledge of educational/training program development and presentation techniques. Knowledge of teaching principles and methods. Ability to research, develop, evaluate, and revise educational/training programs. Ability to coordinate and conduct educational/training programs. Ability to prepare reports and maintain records. Ability to review and analyze applications and supporting documentation. Ability to present ideas and information to large and diverse groups.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in special education, education, psychology, or a related field; plus four years of professional level experience, including one year of supervisory experience. Must be licensed a Certified Teacher or Special Education Instructor. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
