SENIOR BROADCAST ENGINEER

The Senior Broadcast Engineer is responsible for supervising a subordinate technical staff, diagramming the installation of equipment, and providing technical assistance in the repair of transmitter and microwave equipment. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Special Job Requirements:

VHF radio and digital television experience.

Typical Functions:

Supervises a technical subordinate staff by interviewing and recommending for hire, establishing work plans, making work assignments, resolving difficult or complex problems, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Troubleshoots analog and digital television systems and station components, including television cameras, digital video router, video servers, video switchers, video tape machines, computers, network switches, and analog and digital audio mixer consoles. Plans the installation of new equipment and writes equipment and service specifications for use in bidding process. Diagrams installations of equipment for use in diagnosing equipment malfunctions. Provides assistance to technical staff in diagnosing, repairing, and installing equipment. Maintains supply of replacement parts by discussing cost with vendors and checking parts upon delivery. Performs Federal Communication Commission compliance test on transmitters as needed. Monitors the operation of remote transmitters via remote control return link to identify malfunctions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Knowledge of Federal Communication Commission rules and regulations regarding television transmission. Knowledge of electrical equipment installation, malfunctions and repair techniques. Knowledge of television transmission systems. Ability to monitor, test, troubleshoot, install, and repair electronic equipment. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of a subordinate technical staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus two years of specialized training in radio and/or television transmission systems; plus six years of experience in television/radio operations or electronics repair and maintenance, including two years in a supervisory capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
