RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIST

The Research Technologist is responsible for performing and analyzing tests in a research laboratory and assisting in the administration of the laboratory. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Develops and modifies test procedures and equipment for use in laboratory. Coordinates schedule of laboratory and staff. Trains new employees and instructs students in operation of laboratory. Inventories and orders laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment. Performs research experiments by surgery on animals and/or interviewing patients or participants in project. Analyzes test results and compiles into report form. Evaluates and makes recommendations to laboratory administration on operation of laboratory. Researches papers and journals to keep updated on research science techniques. Assists laboratory administration in preparing grant applications and determining budgets. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of research science. Knowledge of laboratory methods, techniques and procedures. Ability to perform research experiments and compile and analyze results. Ability to develop new laboratory methods and procedures. Ability to instruct others in the use of a research laboratory. Ability to maintain and compile administrative data for budget purposes.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a major in chemistry, biology, physics or a related field; plus two years of experience in a research laboratory.
