RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY LEADER I

The Recreational Activity Leader I is responsible for providing recreational activities for residents of a state-operated facility. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Plans and schedules recreational activities, determines staff, vehicles, facilities, and equipment needs, and prepares and posts schedule of events. Leads recreational activities, checks out equipment, teaches and coaches participants, monitors student behavior, and resolves disputes. Develops and/or modifies programs or games, as necessary, to permit participation by disabled or restricted residents. Contacts various resource groups for information concerning events and ticket costs and drives vehicle to transport residents to events, restaurants, or other outings. Monitors, documents, and implements appropriate behavior programs. Attends workshops, in-service, staff, and other student related meetings, as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreational activity programs. Knowledge of activity therapy and behavior modification. Ability to instruct, direct, and participate in recreational activities. Ability to evaluate, modify, and recommend activities to meet clients treatment objectives. Ability to prepare, set-up, and maintain equipment used in recreational activities. Ability to observe and record client behavior and participation during activities. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus one year of experience in a patient activities program in a health care setting, social, or recreational program. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
