PHYSICIAN SPECIALIST

The Physician Specialist is responsible for diagnosing, treating, and helping to prevent diseases and injuries that commonly occur in the general population. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Provides general supervision of the work of subordinate employees, by prioritizing work assignments, establishing deadlines, providing general instructions, and reviewing the work performed, to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with instructions or established policies and procedures. Advises patients and community members concerning diet, activity, hygiene, and disease prevention and collects, records, and maintains patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examination results. Conducts research to study anatomy and develop or test medications, treatments, or procedures, to prevent or control disease or injury, and plans, implements, or administers health programs or standards in hospitals, businesses, or community for information, prevention, or treatment of injury or illness. Directs and coordinates work activities with nurses, social workers, rehabilitation therapists, pharmacists, psychologists, students, assistants, and other health care providers. Explains procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients, monitors patients’ conditions and progress, and re-evaluates treatments as necessary. Operates on patients, to remove, repair, or improve functioning of diseased or injured body parts and systems, orders, performs, and interprets tests, and analyzes records, reports, and examination information to diagnose patients’ condition. Prepares reports for government or management of birth, death, disease statistics, workforce evaluations, or medical status of individuals. Prescribes or administers treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury and refers patients to medical specialists or other practitioners when necessary. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern medicine. Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the practices relating to the care and treatment of patients. Knowledge of characteristics of people with developmental disabilities. Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinates. Ability to establish and maintain the physician/patient relationship. Ability to diagnose and treat patients. Ability to prepare reports and maintain files.

Minimum Qualifications:

Licensed as a Physician by the Arkansas State Medical Board as established by ACA Ãâ€ÂšÃƒÃ‚ƒÃƒ‚‚§17-95-401 et al. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
