PHYSICAL THERAPIST

The Physical Therapist is responsible for assisting in physical therapy treatment programs
by carrying out specific treatments and preparing treatment equipment and areas. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Observes patients during treatment to compile and evaluate data on patient responses and progress. Measures patient’s range-of-joint motion, body parts, and vital signs to determine effects of treatments or as documentation for patient evaluations. Instructs, motivates, safeguards, and assists patients practicing exercises and functional activities under direction of medical staff. Confers with physical therapy staff and others to discuss and evaluate patient information for planning, modifying, and coordination of treatment activities. Cleans and organizes work area and disinfects equipment after patient treatment. Maintains equipment and furniture to keep it in good working condition, including performing the assembly and disassembly of equipment and accessories. Administers active and passive manual therapeutic exercises, therapeutic massage, and heat, light, sound, water, and electrical modality treatments such as ultrasound. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of techniques, medical ethics, and technical procedures involved in the practice of physical therapy. Knowledge of equipment and supplies utilized in the provision of physical therapy. Knowledge of state and federal regulations governing physical therapy programs. Ability to test patients, develop treatment plans, and administer physical therapy. Ability to operate and perform minor maintenance and repair of exercise equipment. Ability to treat aggressive patients. Ability to complete written reports and maintain patient records. Ability to conduct training and assess physical therapy program compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a master’s degree in physical therapy from an accredited institution; plus two years of experience in physical therapy.

Required Certificates:

Must be licensed as a Physical Therapist by the State Board of Physical Therapy in accordance with ACA 17-93-303.
