OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST

The Occupational Therapist is responsible for assessing, administering, and participating in rehabilitative programs, evaluating like skills tests, and providing and directing therapy instruction. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Participates in various tests by evaluating the social, psychosocial, independent, and daily living skills of patients and records test results. Creates and implements individualized therapy activities to fit patients’ needs and capabilities and monitors patients’ performance in therapy activities. Observes, assesses, and prepares reports on patients’ progress. Instructs or assists in instructing patients and family members in basic living skills, treatment goals and programs, and the care and use of adaptive equipment. Attends in-service training and consults with treatment team in altering and/or developing patients’ therapy activities, goals, and objectives. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of occupational therapy principles, practices, and techniques. Knowledge of occupational therapy program management. Ability to coordinate occupational therapy activities and programs. Ability to evaluate and write individualized therapy programs. Ability to provide instruction and observe, assess, and document patient progress. Ability to assist in the development of therapy programs, goals, and objectives. Ability to provide instructions in the use of equipment and adaptive devices. Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy; plus two years of experience in occupational therapy. Must be licensed as an Occupational Therapist by the Arkansas State Medical Board. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
