MUSEUM PROGRAM ASSISTANT I

The Museum Program Assistant I is responsible for conducting and overseeing guided tours. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Answers telephones, greets and registers visitors, answers questions regarding tours and sites, and schedules tours. Conducts guided tours of historic buildings and sites. Provides assistance at the museum gift shop. Assists in training new employees on cash register operations, scheduling tours, operating video theaters, and performing other museum related tasks. Keeps historic buildings clean and performs maintenance, as assigned. Purchases and stocks resale items and assists with inventory monthly. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of state and national, cultural, and editorial history. Knowledge of care and maintenance of museum equipment, displays, and articles. Ability to conduct tours and make oral presentations. Ability to operate audio-visual equipment. Ability to write narrative interpretations of historical events.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
