LIBRARIAN

The Librarian is responsible for overseeing library services and assisting patrons with research and documentation requests. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Assists patrons in locating documents and instructing them in the use of library resources and facilities. Answers questions in person, by telephone, or computer. Researches and recommends the purchase of books, serials, and equipment for the library. Assigns and reviews the work of technical and clerical assistants. Interprets library rules and policies to public and staff. Maintains specific collections within the library including ordering and processing of new materials and shelf maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of library procedures, policies and operations. Knowledge of operation of standard library equipment. Knowledge of basic reference tools and sources. Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Ability to conduct research and make recommendations of library purchases. Ability to research policy and procedural problems and recommend corrective measures. Ability to prioritize tasks, establish methods, and schedule employees. Ability to direct and/or oversee the work of others. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with others. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Ability to work with the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in a related field, including at least twelve hours in library science courses. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
