GIS TECHNICIAN

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician is responsible for analyzing and interpreting geographic information and utilizing geographic information systems to prepare maps and geological publications. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Collects information about specific features of the Earth using aerial photography and other digital remote sensing techniques. Revises existing maps and charts, making all necessary corrections and adjustments. Compiles data required for map preparation, including aerial photographs, survey notes, records, reports, and original maps. Examines and analyzes data from ground surveys, reports, aerial photographs, and satellite images to prepare topographic maps, aerial-photograph mosaics, and related charts. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of principles and methods for describing the features of land, sea, and air masses, including their physical characteristics, locations, interrelationships, and distribution of plant, animal, and human life. Knowledge of global positioning technology, graphics, and photo imaging software. Knowledge of the principles and practices of drafting. Knowledge of the uses, techniques, and care of drawing instruments. Ability to read and interpret maps, charts, aerial photographs, and statistics. Ability to maintain records.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus two years of vocational training or experience in drafting, art, or related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
