EDUCATIONAL SPECIALIST

The Educational Specialist is responsible for planning and teaching a specialized curriculum to students with impairments. This position is governed by state and federal laws and school board and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Plans and instructs students in the assigned general/academic curriculum while ensuring state mandated frameworks are followed. Evaluates strengths and weakness of students through assessments such as written work, observation, testing, and oral feedback and completes reports on student achievement. Creates and/or modifies teaching materials and learning aids for compatibility with each student’s needs and abilities. Develops lesson plans for teaching Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) and classroom goals complying with the curriculum guidelines and state mandated frameworks. Communicates student’s goals, progress, and/or problems with student’s parents, and/or other staff. Provides technical assistance and consultation to other staff regarding curricula, materials, and the identification and assessment of the impaired. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of educational planning and teaching techniques. Knowledge of learning aids and teaching materials appropriate to the subject matter and specific impairment. Ability to develop course materials and teach students. Ability to evaluate progress and revise Individualized Educational Plan’s (IEP) and lesson plans. Ability to provide advice and guidance relative to the education related to the impairment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Certified in an appropriate teaching area by the Arkansas Department of Education, the Department of Workforce Education, the ACVREP, or the appropriate certifying agency for the specific position as established by ACA 6-17-401, 6-17-402, and 6-17-403. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
