ECOLOGIST COORDINATOR

The Ecologist Coordinator is responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of an ecological section. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy

Typical Functions:

Provides supervision of the work of subordinate employees by prioritizing work assignments, establishing deadlines, providing general instructions, and reviewing the work performed to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with instructions or established policies and procedures. Conducts environmental audits and inspections and investigations of violations. Evaluates violations or problems discovered during inspections in order to determine appropriate regulatory actions, or to provide advice on the development and prosecution of regulatory cases. Acts as an expert witness in court proceedings. Communicates scientific and technical information through oral briefings, written documents, workshops, conferences, and public hearings. Reviews and implements environmental technical standards, guidelines, policies, and formal regulations that meet all appropriate requirements. Provides technical guidance, support, and oversight to environmental programs, industry, and the general public. Provides advice on proper standards and regulations and the development of policies, strategies, and codes of practice for environmental management. Determines data collection methods to be employed in research projects and surveys. Attends and participates in professional meetings and seminars to stay abreast of changes in the fields of ecology and biology. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of biological and ecological science theories and principles. Knowledge of the methods and techniques of scientific testing and analysis. Knowledge of the effects of pollution on plants, animals, and human life. Knowledge of pollution control laws and regulations. Knowledge of environmental and ecological forces and impact relationships. Ability to assign and coordinate work activities and monitor the performance of co-workers and/or subordinates. Ability to conduct and direct the activities of an ecology section. Ability to prepare and make oral and written presentations. Ability to identify, record, and analyze the ecological make-up of natural areas. Ability to write descriptive results of analysis and prepare and present oral and written information.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in a field of environmental or natural science or related field; plus four years of experience in a field of environmental or natural science or related area, including one year in a leadership or supervisory capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
