DLL BD OF BARBER EXAM INSPECTOR

The Board of Barber Examiners Inspector is responsible for ensuring the operations of barbershops and barber schools comply with applicable state laws, rules, and regulations. This position is governed by state and federal law and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Inspects barbershops and barber schools for compliance with applicable laws by verifying license, number of licensed instructors, and instructor-student ratio of barber schools, and ensures current licenses are displayed in a conspicuous manner. Inspects new barbershops to verify proper signage, water supply, and waste disposal; and reviews floor plans and plumbing permits to issue final approval for shop licensing. Reviews procedures for sterilization of all instruments and supplies and ensures facilities are maintained in clean, sanitary condition with proper ventilation. Issues notices of violations and conducts follow-up inspections to ensure corrections have been made. Investigates complaints of suspected violations and hand delivers notifications of license suspension/revocation. Gathers evidence and has warrants issued for arrest in cases of serious violations and may appear in court to testify in prosecution of such violators. Prepares and submits reports on barbershops and barber schools, including summaries of shop inspections, new shop approvals, complaints, investigations, number of violations issued, and arrests and convictions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of practice of barbering and associated sanitation and safety practices. Knowledge of state laws, rules, and regulations governing operations of barbershops and barber schools. Ability to inspect operations of barber schools and barbershops for compliance, cite violations, and take appropriate corrective action Ability to maintain records. Ability to prepare written reports. Ability to handle inquiries from barber school personnel, barbershop owners, barbers, and public officials. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education of a high school diploma or equivalent; plus three years of experience as a practicing barber in a licensed barbershop.

Required Certificates:

Must be certified as a Registered Barber by the State Board of Barber Examiners in accordance with ACA 17-20-301. Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license.
