DISCIPLINARY HEARING OFFICER

The Disciplinary Hearing Officer is responsible for chairing disciplinary hearings for inmates of the Department of Correction. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Conducts disciplinary hearings, gives inmates and staff members the opportunity to present Evidence, and records facts, comments, and witness statements concerning disciplinaries on tape recorder for official records. Reviews statements and evidence relevant to disciplinaries, determines guilt or innocence and action to take, reads decisions to inmates, explains the reasons for the findings, and informs inmates of right to appeal and the appeals process. Collects and reviews inmates institution files, disciplinaries, supporting documents, and evidence to ensure that required documents are present and in order. Completes the disciplinary hearing action forms for each case, including documenting evidence, explaining findings and recording the inmate’s plea, verdict, and punishment. Conducts classes on report writing and on disciplinary policy and procedures for Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy trainees. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of correctional institution’s policies and procedures. Knowledge of correction records system management. Ability to analyze information gathered verbally and in writing. Ability to maintain files and records. Ability to conduct disciplinary hearings. Ability to prepare and present oral and written material.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus five years of experience in correctional security, or related area. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
