DHE COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

The Department of Higher Education (DHE) Communications Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and managing all media needs and projects for the Arkansas Department of Higher Education. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Coordinates information gathered from all state colleges, universities, and others in the higher education community to write, edit, photograph, and layout the agency newsletter. Maintains database of media contacts, serves as agency spokesperson, and researches, writes, distributes, and follows-up on all news releases. Serves as Arkansas Go Alliance representative for the Southern Regional Education Board and promotes the state 529 GIFT College Investing Plan and 15 financial aid programs. Direct activities for all agency new conferences, including preparing press kits and writing/talking points for participants. Provides summaries for high-profile issues as they relate to higher education or related subjects for senior staff and other appropriate internal or external contacts. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to related federal and state programs. Knowledge of Associated Press style for media purposes. Knowledge of print and graphic layout design. Knowledge of agency organizational structure, mission, and purpose. Ability to work with others to assure program compliance and responsiveness. Ability to communicate in oral and written form. Ability to analyze complex administrative problems and develop effective courses of action.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in education, journalism, graphic design, print media, or a related field; plus three years of experience in print journalism or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
