DFA RACING COMMISSION JUDGE

The DFA Racing Commission Judge is responsible for the inspection of greyhounds, observing, reviewing, and recording official race results at Southland Greyhound Park, and conducting hearings of those to whom fines have been levied. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Special Job Requirements:

Shift work involving irregular working hours, to include holidays and weekends, is required.

Typical Functions:

Inspects and approves weigh-in and condition of greyhounds and disqualifies dogs deemed unfit for racing. Approves the official draw of post positions for greyhound races. Examines track conditions daily to check for irregularities. Observes and records schooling and pari-mutuel races and determines order of finish. Prepares and submits official daily race result reports. Conducts hearings, hears testimony, interprets and applies appropriate Racing Commission rules and regulations, issues rulings, and imposes fines. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of national and state laws, rules, and regulations governing greyhound racing and pari-mutuel wagering. Knowledge of animal inspection techniques. Ability to inspect and evaluate condition of greyhounds. Ability to conduct hearings and apply appropriate rules and regulations to determine results. Ability to observe and record official race information according to established policy. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of an associate’s degree in agri-business, agriculture, or a related field; plus two years of experience in race track operations or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
