DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST

The Development Specialist is responsible for organizational fund raising and promotional programs and activities. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Supervises subordinate staff engaged in promotional and fund raising activities by establishing work plans, staff assignments, resolving problems, and evaluating employee performance. Develops, coordinates, implements, and evaluates programs and events, including marketing strategies, education workshops, fund raising events, membership development drives, guest lectures, and facility tours. Advertises programs and events through publications, audiovisual presentations, media releases, and seminars or workshops. Recruits, trains, and coordinates volunteers to assist with special events and projects. Oversees fund raising activities by developing funding proposals and structures, identifying funding sources, soliciting funds, maintaining computer database donor and prospective donor files, and preparing grant applications. Maintains organizational website by designing images and links, developing maintenance plans and schedules, and monitoring expenditures. Assists upper level management in developing long range plans, preparing budget information, and implementing policies and procedures. Serves as liaison between staff and governing board and commission members. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Knowledge of marketing techniques and fund raising strategies. Knowledge of public relations principles and practices. Ability to develop, coordinate, and implement promotional and fund raising programs and events. Ability to recruit and train volunteers for special events. Ability to supervise a subordinate staff in promotional and fund raising activities. Ability to communicate with donors and/or prospective donors regarding solicitation and use of funds.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing or a related field; plus three years of experience in public relations, fundraising or a related area, including one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
