DENTAL HYGIENIST

The Dental Hygienist is responsible for cleaning and polishing the teeth of patients and providing dental hygiene information and instructions to patients and care providers. This position is governed state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Schedules and notifies patients of appointments. Prepares for patient by setting up supplies, equipment, and instruments to be used in examination and treatment. Incepts patient for treatment by greeting and seating the patient, taking, developing, and examining oral x-rays, and charting abnormalities and general oral structures. Examines patient’s teeth, gums, and mouth visually to identify abnormalities and notifies dentist as necessary. Cleans teeth by using a variety of dental instruments to remove calcium, plaque, and stains, polishes teeth, and applies fluoride treatment, if required, and notifies dentist of completion of treatment. Counsels patients on proper dental hygiene or provides instruction to care providers on proper dental care to be administered. Dismisses patient, pending approval of dentist, and records treatment in patient medical record and daily log. Prepares purchase order and requisition forms for supplies and equipment and compiles and prepares monthly activity report. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of dental hygiene. Knowledge of the diseases of the gums. Knowledge of treatments and instruments used in dental hygiene services including x-rays. Ability to perform preventative and therapeutic services under the supervision of a dentist. Ability to take, develop, and examine x-rays and chart abnormalities and general oral structures. Ability to instruct patients on proper hygiene or provide instruction to care providers. Ability to maintain treatment records and logs. Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a diploma from an accredited dental hygiene program; plus three years of experience as a dental hygienist.

Required Certificates:

Must be licensed as a Dental Hygienist by the State Board of Dental Examiners in accordance with ACA 17-82-306.
