DENTAL ASSISTANT

The Dental Assistant is responsible for providing chair-side assistance to a dentist engaged in providing dental treatment. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Prepares patient, sterilizes and disinfects instruments, sets up instrument trays, prepares materials, and assists the dentist during dental procedures. Assists in scheduling procedures and provides postoperative instructions prescribed by the dentist. Exposes dental diagnostic x-rays and records treatment information in patient records. Takes vital signs and records medical and dental histories of patients. Assists the dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies. Pours, trims, and polishes study casts and makes preliminary impressions and occlusal registrations for mounting study casts. Instructs patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs. Cleans and polishes removable appliances. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the clinical aspects of dentistry including instrument identification, tray set up, charting, and chair-side conduct. Knowledge of recordkeeping practices. Ability to apply chair-side assistance techniques in a dental business office. Ability to set up trays and sharpen and maintain dental instruments. Ability to schedule patients and record dental procedures/treatments in patient charts. Ability to take vital signs of patients.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a diploma from an accredited dental assistant program; plus three years of experience as a dental assistant.

Required Certificates:

Must be permitted as a Permitted Dental Assistant from the Board of Dental Examiners in accordance with ACA 17-82-404.
