CURATOR

The Curator is responsible for developing and managing museum collections and exhibit programs, as well as assisting the supervisor in administering museum activities. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Special Job Requirements:

Occasional in-state and weekend travel is required. Valid Arkansas driver’s license is required.

Typical Functions:

Acquires museum items, by purchase or acceptance of donations, to develop and ensure collection growth in the museum, archives, and library. Researches and writes history and descriptions of collection items, to properly illustrate displays, and catalogs items. Develops and implements a conservation program, to preserve the collections, and monitors the maintenance and storage of exhibits. Selects and develops museum exhibitions and directs and coordinates exhibit activities. Analyzes and recommends museum needs to supervisor and participates in policy and procedure development. Reviews financial information to project needs, prepares budget for supervisor’s approval, and monitors expenditures. Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, and human resources. Knowledge of historical events and their causes, indicators, and effects on civilizations and cultures. Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods, including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media. Ability to develop specific goals and plans to preserve and organize museum collections. Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written formats.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, art history or related field; plus four years of work-related experience. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
