COMPUTER PUBLISHING OPERATOR

The Computer Publishing Operator is responsible for operating computerized typesetting
equipment and designing typesetting jobs. This position is governed by state and federal
laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Operates computerized typesetting equipment and completes typesetting projects by determining project layout, design, and style of type to be used. Monitors computerized typesetting equipment, checks equipment for proper function, and makes service calls for equipment repairs. Records typeset jobs in log book, returns typeset jobs to departments for final approval and handles complaints concerning work done. Operates automatic film processor and laser printer, cleans and performs preventative maintenance on equipment, and stocks paper and toner supplies for laser printer. Assists art department with paste-up work, offers technical advice on printing procedures, corrects preparatory work for printing projects, and keeps abreast of new technologies. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of operating and maintaining typesetting equipment. Knowledge of printing techniques, design and layout. Ability to maintain accurate records. Ability to operate computerized typesetting equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus three years of experience in typesetting operations, print design and layout, or a related area.
