COMPUTER LAB TECHNICIAN

The Computer Lab Technician is responsible for assisting students by providing hardware and software support in a laboratory setting. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Assists students, using hardware/software, to complete assignments in a computer laboratory setting. Trains and supervises lab assistants on the use of software and hardware. Maintains, diagnoses, and repairs computer equipment, and, if necessary, arranges for repair or replacement. Maintains inventory and updates software and computer hardware and provides storage and backup of software. Prepares lab and work schedules for lab assistants and develops procedures for lab usage. Dispenses hardware/software and documentation to faculty as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the operations of personal computers and the functions of the software used. Ability to train and supervise lab assistants and organize lab and work schedules. Ability to determine cause of computer or software problems and resolve or refer for maintenance and repair. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus the completion of technical training in computer science, data processing, or a related field, as might be acquired from a vocational, military, or industrial setting or related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
