ASST PRINCIPAL

The Assistant Principal is responsible for assisting the school principal in supervising the educational programs and activities in the school buildings. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Participates in managing, overseeing, and evaluating procedures for the operation of the school consistent with its philosophy, mission, values and goals; including the instructional programs, extracurricular activities, disciplinary systems, human resources, office operations, and emergency procedures. Assists in directing the instructional programs of the school by evaluating lesson plans and observing classes, on a regular basis, to ensure use of instructional strategies and materials consistent with research on learning and child growth and development. Monitors Individual Educational Plans (IEP) and other due process activities for special needs students, including participating in parent conferences, to ensure that special programs are in compliance with established standards and guidelines. Establishes procedures for evaluation and selection of instructional materials and equipment and submits to principal for approval. Participates in the selection and assigning of staff. Encourages use of community resources, interprets the school program for the community, and maintains communication with community members. Informs staff of district educational philosophy and objectives and assists them with planning and implementing prescribed instructional programs. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, and polices governing education in the state. Knowledge of state standards for education. Knowledge of curriculum and instructional programs and practices. Knowledge of instructive and adaptive technology. Ability to plan, organize, and implement educational programs. Ability to use data in decision making process. Ability to communicate with students, parents, and the general public regarding school operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a master’s degree in educational administration or a related field; plus four years of experience in an educational setting or a related field.
