ASST DIR COMPUTER SVCS

The Assistant Director of Computer Services is responsible for maintaining and administering computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, networks, and computer configurations. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Diagnoses and resolves system, network, hardware or software problems. Confers with computer services users to solve continuing system problems. Designs and coordinates implementation of network security to protect hardware, software, and data. Determines schedule for data backups and plans for disaster recovery of data. Monitors network performance for availability, adjustments, and upgrades. Conducts testing on new computer hardware and software. Determines implementation plan for software upgrades and replacement of hardware computer components. Assists in the selection and training of new employees, assigns and manages employee work and project schedules, and evaluates employee work performance. Assists in the development of computer services access and usage policies. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of computer networks, systems, hardware, and software. Knowledge of management principles that utilize strategic planning and coordination of people and resources. Ability to identify computer problems and develop solutions and options. Ability to communicate verbally and in written form. Ability to provide guidance and technical assistance to management and staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field; plus three years of experience in computer support plus one year of supervisory experience. OR Completion of technical training in computer science, data processing, or a related field acquired from a vocational, military or industrial setting, plus five years of experience in computer support including one year of supervisory experience. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
