ASSOCIATE PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR

The Associate Professional Counselor is responsible for providing personal, social, career/vocational and/or academic counseling and guidance services. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Conducts personal and group counseling sessions, performs crisis intervention, recommends action based on evaluation and makes referrals to mental health, social, or professional counseling services. Recommends clients for job placement in development programs, gathers client files and records, develops treatment plans for clients, refers clients to mental health, social service, or professional counseling services, determines urgency of client’s needs through intake evaluations and discusses cases with staff. Plans, schedules, administers, and scores self-assessment tests, obtains test publications, collects data, and develops reports. Develops informational literature, updates and distributes information, maintains resource library, and mails information to various organizations. Researches professional journals to keep abreast of counseling trends, develops new counseling strategies, makes presentations, conducts workshops, attends conferences, prepares brochures, displays, and public service announcements, and compiles activity reports. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of counseling principles and practices. Knowledge of research methods and techniques. Ability to provide information, guidance and support to clients. Ability to observe, evaluate, and assess client needs and abilities. Ability to direct the work of others

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in counseling or related field; plus three years of experience in counseling or related area. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
