ASP TROOPER 1ST CLASS

The Arkansas State Police (ASP) Trooper First Class is responsible for enforcing traffic and criminal laws. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Special Job Requirements:

Constant in-state travel, shift work, abnormal working hours, on-call duty, and exposure to danger are required. The wearing of uniforms and firearms is required.

Typical Functions:

Patrols state highways and monitors traffic in assigned area using vehicle equipped with two-way radios and radar, assists motorists, enforces motor vehicle and criminal laws by issuing citations and making arrests, and assists other law enforcement agencies. Directs traffic and controls activities in disaster areas, administers first aid, investigates conditions and causes of accidents, and prepares accident reports. Appears in court as a witness in traffic violations and criminal cases, maintains records, and prepares and submits reports. Maintains equipment, performs preventive maintenance checks on vehicle and other equipment, performs minor maintenance, and delivers equipment to the appropriate shop for repairs. Investigates and apprehends persons suspected of illegal sale or use of narcotics and other crimes. Interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects. Initiates and maintains surveillance, collects evidence and submits to magistrate for warrant, and writes reports. Travels throughout assigned area checking vehicle inspection records, administering examinations to employees, and certifying motor vehicle inspection stations. Visits stations to detect operating violations, investigates complaints, and suspends station operation when necessary. Administers and evaluates polygraph examinations, interrogates suspects to clarify deceptions, and documents results. Administers and grades drivers’ license examinations and maintains files, reports, and examination material. Develops and presents certification training to state police officers and other law enforcement officials. Presents safety programs to schools, civic groups, and the public, and serves as media spokesperson for the state police during crisis events. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of traffic and criminal laws and agency policies and procedures. Knowledge of law enforcement methods and techniques. Ability to assign and coordinate work activities and monitor the performance of co-workers and/or subordinates. Ability to handle weapons, exercise self-defense, and administer first aid. Ability to patrol highways, conduct investigations, and enforce criminal and traffic laws. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Skill in the operation of firearms.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must have served for a period of at least four and one-half years as a Trooper in the Arkansas State Police as established by Arkansas State Police policy number 89-052.

Required Certificates:

Must be a certified as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training in accordance with ACA 12-9-106. Must possess a current Arkansas driver’s license.
