ASP PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER

The Arkansas State Police (ASP) Public Information Officer is responsible for representing the department in disseminating information and establishing positive relations with the public and the media. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Special Job Requirements:

Occasional in-state travel is required.

Typical Functions:

Provides information to the director and staff on departmental issues, programs, and problems, and provides advice on possible resolutions. Develops and recommends new methods and procedures to improve the effectiveness of inter-agency communication. Receives and gathers information on all departmental matters and contacts appropriate individuals to clarify, confirm, or obtain additional information as needed. Attends meetings, hearings, and legislative functions as a representative of the department and the director to exchange information concerning departmental matters with the public and its officials and to monitor legislative activities and decisions affecting departmental operations. Coordinates media coverage for significant departmental programs or emergency events to ensure the accuracy and completeness of information. Performs other duties as assigned. Occasional in-state travel is required.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of communication methods, practices and procedures. Knowledge of ASP laws, rules and regulations. Knowledge of legislative processes. Knowledge of operational activities occurring within ASP. Ability to compile and disseminate information. Ability to advise on departmental issues. Ability to coordinate media coverage. Ability to arrange departmental events. Ability to prepare and present information orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public administration or a related field; plus five years of experience in public or media relations, mass communications, journalism or a related field.

Required Certificates:

Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license.
