AGS SUPERVISOR

The Arkansas Geological Survey (AGS) Supervisor is responsible for directing the activities of an assigned geological discipline. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Supervises AGS Specialists and administrative support staff, by interviewing, recommending for hire, assigning and reviewing work assignments, training, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Oversees staff in the planning and preparation of reports, charts, publications, and maps pertaining to geologic resources. Prepares and edits specialized geological data for reports, charts, publications and maps. Reviews and provides assistance on projects involving sample collections, cores, mapping, and map inventory and/or sales. Coordinates and monitors inventory and databases with geophysical logs and data, sample collections, cores, cuttings, reports, publications, and maps. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of state laws and regulations pertaining to geological activities. Knowledge of database and Microsoft Office software. Knowledge of supervision principles. Knowledge of inventory and record keeping protocol. Ability to assign and coordinate work activities and monitor the performance of co-workers and/or subordinates. Ability to prepare, review, and edit technical reports and geological publications. Ability to conduct geological investigations and to conduct independent scientific research. Ability to use Microsoft Office software and database software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to maintain organization in staff and projects. Ability to establish and maintain geological inventory and records.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in earth science, business, English, geology, or a related field; plus two years of experience in research, inventory management, or a related field including two years in a supervisory capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
