AGS SPECIALIST

The Arkansas Geological Survey (AGS) Specialist is responsible for preparing, storing, and cataloging core samples from oil, gas, and water wells in the state. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Updates records and maintains files for the well sample library including cuttings and core samples from oil, gas, and water wells. Prepares samples, then catalogs, files, and records them into the sample library. Receives requests for loan of samples and prepares and ships samples to companies and/or universities for analysis and study; maintains records of these loans and ensures timely return to the sample library. Maintains building and grounds at well sample library; performs routine equipment repair and maintenance. May oversee the work of part-time extra help employees. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures. Knowledge of record keeping methods and procedures. Ability to collect and prepare rock and mineral samples for the sample library. Ability to maintain accurate records and files. Ability to assign and coordinate work activities and monitor the performance of extra help employees. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus one year of experience in recordkeeping. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE. 1
