The Agriculture Commodity Area Supervisor is responsible for supervising commodity graders and commodity compliance inspectors within assigned area. This position is governed by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations, state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

Frequent in-state travel is required. Work other than normal working hours is required.

Typical Functions:

Provides general supervision of a subordinate staff by interviewing, recommending hire/fire, assigning and reviewing job assignments, and evaluating subordinates performance. Supervises the mandatory inspection of shell eggs at retail outlets to ensure compliance with the Arkansas Egg Marketing Act of 1969. Directs and supervises the poultry programs in the grading of the egg and poultry products. Supervises and implements the training programs in poultry processing plants. Coordinates the programs for voluntary grading services. Ensures uniform interpretation and application of USDA regulations, instructions, standards, and specifications by disseminating informational and regulatory changes to staff and poultry processing facilities. Inspects plant facilities, and makes recommendations regarding licenses and plant approvals. Facilitates and resolves company complaints. Enforces the Egg Product Inspection Act; regulates the disposition of shell eggs at official plants, checks all labels, and reviews company records. Completes daily forms and reports. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of supervisory practices and techniques. Knowledge of USDA regulations. Knowledge of the cooperative agreements with USDA as it relates to grading service. Knowledge of USDA grading and instructional manuals. Knowledge of shell egg and poultry processing equipment. Ability to communicate with industry management concerning grading/operational problems and to recommend correction action. Ability to pass a standardized test on federal regulations governing the grading and inspection of poultry and/or poultry products. Ability to prepare inspection reports including production data, grading results, and certificates issued, noting any grading errors. Ability to train selected industry personnel to grade poultry and/or poultry products to USDA standards. Ability to explain the grading services to industry, buyers, and consumers.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of an bachelor’s degree or technical training; plus five years of experience in poultry inspection, commodity grading, or a related field, includingone year in a leadership or supervisory capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.

Required Certificates:

Must be licensed by the USDA as a poultry and/or shell egg grader to grade shell eggs, poultry, turkey, chicken, rabbits, and surveillance as established by the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946 as amended (7USC 1621).
