ADH CANCER INFORMATION MANGMT SPECIALIST

The Cancer Information Management Specialist is responsible for collecting and abstracting cancer data as well as ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the medical record and the abstracted data. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Special Job Requirements:

Knowledge of principles and practices of public health program administration. Knowledge of college level anatomy and physiology, as well as medical terminology. Knowledge of cancer registry standards (ex NAACR, SEER, etc). Knowledge of Health Information

Typical Functions:

Reviews patient medical records, disease indices, pathology reports, and other sources to identify reportable cancer diagnoses. Collects cancer data from a variety of medical providers; enters relevant and accurate information into the cancer database management system. Abstracts and codes data, consolidates cases, and stages reportable cancer occurrences according to national cancer registry standards; compiles researched data for the national cancer registry. Assists with quality assurance tasks related to researched data; develops methods of improving case ascertainment, timeliness, and accurate data collection. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of principles and practices of public health program administration. Knowledge of college level anatomy and physiology, as well as medical terminology. Knowledge of cancer registry standards (ex NAACR, SEER, etc). Knowledge of Health Information Management (Medical Records) processes including ICD-9 and ICD-O-3 coding. Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Knowledge of word processing and database applications. Ability to analyze and organize data. Ability to prepare oral and written information and reports. Ability to monitor effectiveness of research programs and services. Ability to communicate with a diverse group of people.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in public health, public health administration, or a related field; plus one year of experience in a public health program OR a master’s degree in public health, public health administration, or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
