ADH ASBN ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

The Arkansas State Board of Nursing (ASBN) Assistant Director is responsible for ensuring compliance for all operational activities related to the practice of nursing. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Coordinates all operational activities pertaining to disciplinary investigations by investigating all official practice complaints against licensed nurses in conjunction with numerous investigative agencies, conducting disciplinary hearings, and properly eradicating the necessary personnel determined to have violated the Nurse Practice Act. Makes site visits to conduct interviews as well as review files and materials; accompanies investigative personnel in any drug diversion investigation upon request. Evaluates applications for licensure that include previous disciplinary action resulting from a felony conviction in a different jurisdiction than the one in which the applicant is applying. Manages actions resulting from nursing practices in order to both incorporate that data within the annual report for the board and ensure complete compliance with board policies. Monitors supervisory personnel controlling agenda preparation for assurance of the proper recommendations to the board regarding existing policy problems in nursing science. Represents ASBN by presenting speeches pertaining to nursing practice regulation, attending conferences throughout the state and the nation, and providing services as a consultant. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of numerous trends in nursing science. Knowledge of current research related to the nursing practice. Knowledge of current research related to disciplinary matters. Knowledge of numerous approaches for reprimanding violations of the Nurse Practice Act. Knowledge of effective verbal and written communication methods. Knowledge of techniques required to diagnose and then treat human diseases. Knowledge of techniques perceived as potential treatment alternatives. Knowledge of preventive health care measures for existing human diseases. Ability to provide medical care to customers and patients. Ability to provide emotional assistance to customers and patients. Ability to obtain information from customers and patients. Ability to analyze information and then evaluate results for proper problem resolution.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s of science in nursing; plus six years of experience in the nursing field, including two years in a supervisory capacity. OR The formal education equivalent of either a doctor of philosophy in nursing or a doctor of nursing practice. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
