ADC FARM ADMINISTRATOR

The Arkansas Department of Correction (ADC) Farm Administrator is responsible for planning and directing the division activities of a large scale diversified self-sufficient farm. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Manages the activities of the Department of Correction agricultural programs. Determines the best time to plant seed, apply fertilizer and chemicals, and harvest crops. Plans the combination of crops planted, and monitors the prices for the crops. Formulates and directs feeding, breeding, and production programs for livestock. Provides direction for lower-level managers and supervisors ensuring program goals and objectives are identified and met. Develops procedures for reporting farm activities, reviews and progress, and prepares comprehensive reports. Coordinates farm activities with other institutional activities. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of large-scale farm management. Knowledge of soils, crops, animal husbandry, farm marketing, materials, equipment and economics. Knowledge of prevention, eradication or cure for plant and animal diseases and pests. Knowledge of financial and statistical reports on farm marketing, accounting and budgeting. Ability to compare farm enterprises of each correctional institution’s farm operation and report findings. Ability to plan and direct large-scale diversified farm activities and make recommendations for efficiency and improvement. Ability to appraise livestock, crops, soils, and market values.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in general agriculture, agriculture business, or related field; plus seven years of experience in agriculture management, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
