ADC DEPUTY DIRECTOR

The Arkansas Department of Correction (ADC) Deputy Director is responsible for directing a large division within the Department of Correction. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Directs the activities of a professional staff through subordinate administrators and managers by reviewing performance evaluation ratings, overseeing operations of various divisions, recommending applicants for hiring and reviewing and approving policies, procedures, and work actions. Participates in a management planning team to formulate and implement department policies and long range goals and objectives for department operations and accomplishment of agency mission. Monitors legislation, research, and innovations affecting agency divisions and ensures compliance with accreditation standards Reviews, negotiates, and monitors various contracts necessary to meet department goals and objectives. Coordinates projects with other state, federal, and local agencies as determined by government officials and agency board. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of correctional systems, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing correctional institutions. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of a professional staff of administrators and managers. Ability to establish program goals and objectives supporting strategic plans. Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective solutions. Ability to interpret and apply laws and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, business, management or a related field; plus nine years of progressively more responsible experience in a correctional system, law enforcement or a related field, including five years in a professional managerial capacity.
