ADC CLASSIFICATION ADMINISTRATOR

The Arkansas Department of Correction (ADC) Classification Administrator is responsible for monitoring and overseeing the classification and records of inmates. The position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Supervises a large size staff by interviewing applicants and recommending hire, assigning and reviewing work, resolving work problems, training employees, and evaluating the job performance of incumbents. Attends unit classification committee meeting to monitor unit classification actions and assures compliance with federal and state laws and department policies. Oversees the maintenance of permanent inmate records, including photograph, commitment documents, finger print images, and other documentation regarding the inmate’s incarceration and discharge pursuant to Arkansas statutory codes. Oversees time computation and parole eligibility of inmate population. Assists unit administration to maximize use of available bed space, addressing the needs of the unit and inmate population, and ensures unit security is maintained. Assists officials in other states regarding transfers of inmates under the Interstate Compact and works with criminal justice officials on rendition of inmates, under the provisions of the Interstate Agreement on detainees. Assists state courts and prosecutors by providing records on past offenses and incarcerations for habitual criminal designation on current prosecutions. Coordinates victim notification system and notifies victims of crime pursuant to statutory provisions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of criminal justice and rehabilitation. Knowledge of the principles and practices of organizational management. Knowledge of Corrections’ institutional policies and procedures. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of lower-level supervisors and/or subordinates. Ability to develop and apply test instruments, policies, and procedures for determining classification and/or custody level of inmates. Ability to monitor institutional requirements for classification and placement of inmates. Ability to coordinate activities with various federal departments and agencies. Ability to provide information orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, political science, sociology, or a related field; plus four years of experience in inmate classification activities, correctional rehabilitation, or a related field, including one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
